Serra do Pilar Monastery

The Serra do Pilar Monastery is a former convent located in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro River, opposite the historic center of Porto, in Portugal.

The building, which established severe standards of solidity and simplicity, was built between 1538 and 1670, in the Renaissance style, for the Order of Saint Benedict of the Ave-Maria.

Since 2016, the Monastery has been considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with other monuments in Porto.

It is open for tourist visits and has a magnificent view over the city of Porto, as well as being possible to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets.
