Diogo Jota Death: Honoring a Life of Family and Football
Diogo Jota's unexpected death leaves a profound impact on English football and his loved ones. This tribute remembers his legacy on the field and, more profoundly, the beautiful family he built with his wife Rute, exploring the depth of their love and the sorrow of his passing.
Diogo Jota left a crater in English football after his unexpected death. But the hardest thing to accept was the life he built with Rute, his wife since they were 15. It hurts to see their happy faces and their words of love and affection. It hurts to think that they will never exist again.
It leaves a deep mark that Rute, his wife, wrote on April 30, 2014, on her Instagram, rutecfcardoso14, "I don't accept losing you, ever! <3"
It hurts to think of Diogo and André's parents losing their only two children.
I am 160 meters from the Chapel of the Resurrection where Diogo and André's bodies lie, and I don't have the courage to approach. I can't bear to look at Rute and their parents. There will be many people there. Probably LFC fans will even sing the chant dedicated to Diogo.
In the face of this surprise dealt by life, it reminds us that we are small and fragile.
Diogo was great on the field. He was great at helping his hometown club without publicity. But he was greatest when building his beautiful family. Perhaps that is his greatest legacy.
It is to his family that I direct my thoughts.
My deepest condolences to Rute, Diogo and André's parents, and the rest of the family.
João Pires
